When you’re as famous as world-beating World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, there’s a ton of stuff you have to deal with that normal citizens don’t. From media responsibilities to autograph signings to being recognized on the street, it’s a lot. But getting Venmo payments and requests from strangers? That’s next level.
But on Tuesday at the 2025 U.S. Open, Scheffler revealed that he hears so regularly from strangers that he’s had to take action.

It arose in response to a question about betting, and whether Scheffler ever notices fans trying to influence his play to help their wagers.
“I think everybody hears from fans whether they have a financial benefit or anything in their outcome,” Scheffler said.
And then he explained his Venmo issues.
“That’s why I had to get rid of my Venmo,” Scheffler said Tuesday, “because I was either getting paid by people or people requesting me a bunch of money when I didn’t win. It wasn’t a good feeling.”
You read that right. According to Scheffler, some fans, after winning a bet on Scheffler, send him money as a thank you. This is the same Scottie Scheffler that won a whopping $62 million on the course in 2024. His 2025 on-course income stands at more than $14.5 million in June.
Scheffler couldn’t put a number figure on how much money fans sent him. But he did reveal that the requests came much more frequently than the payouts.
“I don’t remember the most that somebody would send me. Maybe a couple bucks here or there. That didn’t happen nearly as much as the requests did. (Laughing).”
Scottie is U.S. Open betting favorite
If you’ve watched Scheffler’s season so far, you know that he’s provided plenty of opportunities to win or lose bettors money.
He’s been the betting favorite in every tournament he’s played in this year. Although he didn’t quite live up to his odds when he first returned from a bizarre Christmas injury.
But it didn’t take long for the Scheffler of 2024 to show up.
In May, he captured his first win of the year at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Two weeks later, he captured his third major title at the 2025 PGA Championship. After a respectable T4-finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge, he won again at the Memorial.
All of that led to Scheffler being the betting favorite once again for the U.S. Open.
