Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has reiterated his concerns over Manchester United’s shortcomings and called their Europa League final against Tottenham “massive” after completing a 7-1 aggregate win over Athletic Club.
The 2016/17 Europa League winners produced two of the best performances of Amorim’s reign to thrash the Spanish high-flyers home and away, although the Portuguese identified the preferred foot and attacking qualities of his wingers as one of the issues he is working on as he tries to transform his squad following a dismal domestic campaign.
“We have so many problems – even winning these kind of games,” Amorim said after overseeing a 4-1 home win on Thursday.
“You can see, during the game, we have a lot of things to improve. I make a choice in this moment [that] I’m going to try to save all the players [physically], because it’s really important for us to win the final.”
“I was watching again the ‘99 documentary for inspiration for these moments. It was a great night.”

Man United vs West Ham: ‘We can do better’
United are 15th before hosting fourth-bottom West Ham on Sunday (14:15 BST), with former captain Roy Keane – a seven-time Premier League champion with the club – among their most outspoken critics in his role as a pundit.
Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag in November but has rarely seen his side hit form. Only the bottom four have each recorded fewer league wins than United’s tally of 10.
“We are trying to do our best but I agree,” Amorim said when Keane’s observations were put to him. “We can do better. I don’t have anything to say about the criticism because we deserve it.
“If we cannot accept everything in this kind of season, we are in the wrong business. I have full acknowledgement of that.
“I agree with all the critics… we have to take the risk to get a lot of criticism from everybody, because the standards of Roy Keane and all of these guys are really high.”
Keane: Amorim ‘shocked’ by Man United
Among his frequent public appraisals of United, ex-captain Keane said Amorim would be “scratching his head” after a 4-1 hammering at Newcastle on April 13, by which time the 20-time champions had conceded the fourth-most goals of any club in the division since his arrival from Sporting.
“I bet he cannot believe how bad this team is,” Keane told Sky Sports at the time. “He obviously cannot say that but this group of players, the mistakes they are making – they can’t seem to get around the pitch.
“I think the Premier League has caught this manager and his coaching staff out. I know people do their homework but I think he has gone in there and been shocked about how bad this group of players are.”
