Marc Marquez has been the dominant force in the 2025 MotoGP season. But Fabio Di Giannantonio is not counting himself out just yet.
After five rounds in 2025, Marquez has won eight of the 10 races and claimed all but one pole position thus far. Despite this supreme dominance, two crashes in Austin and Jerez have cost him the lead of the championship.
Brother Alex Marquez won his first MotoGP race in Jerez and subsequently retook the lead of the standings by one point. The Gresini rider has displayed incredible consistency, finishing outside the top two once all season.
Pos. | Rider | Team | Points |
1 | Alex Marquez | Gresini | 140 |
2 | Marc Marquez | Ducati | 139 |
3 | Francesco Bagnaia | Ducati | 120 |
4 | Franco Morbidelli | VR46 | 84 |
5 | Fabio Di Giannantonio | VR46 | 63 |
Alex Marquez knew he had to ‘take advantage’ after brother Marc crashed out of contention in the Grand Prix of Spain. The 28-year-old has finally lifted a huge weight off his shoulders with his maiden win in the premier class, but he will face huge competition to maintain his lead.
The factory Ducatis of Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia will surely have an advantage later in the season when they receive the final evolution of the GP25. The same applies to VR46 rider Di Giannantonio.
The Italian inherited the third factory machine from Jorge Martin after he left for Aprilia following his 2024 title win. With this, Diggia has an advantage over the satellite Ducati riders and wants to take advantage.
Fabio Di Giannantonio is looking to become a ‘pain’ to Marc Marquez with VR46 after recovering from injury
It was a difficult start to the year for the 26-year-old as he broke his collarbone while attempting a wheelie during pre-season testing in Sepang.
V446 pulled Di Giannantonio out of testing so he could fully recover in time for the season. He was still feeling the affect of the injury as he failed to reach Q2 and finished 10th at the season opener in Buriram.
Since then, the Italian has been slowly recovering and has shown encouraging signs of performance. He has scored one podium with third in Austin and sits fifth in the standings heading into the Grand Prix of France.
Speaking with journalist Giovanni Zamagni via his YouTube channel, the VR46 rider says he is in position to win races on the GP25 and is looking to become a ‘pain’ to Marquez now he has fully healed.
When asked if he could take the top step of the podium this year, he replied: “Yes. But I’d like to win them all myself. So this year, in my opinion, we have a package, we have a crazy team of ours.
“I mean, in my opinion, there are some really great opponents obviously. But if we get together for the weekend it’ll be normal for a moment.
“Now that I’m recovering, in my opinion, we can have fun, we can do well, we can be a pain in the a–, we can become among the greats.”

VR46 have the key to be successful with Ducati in 2025
Following Martin and Pramac’s departure from Ducati at the end of 2024, VR46 have taken a step up. Valentino Rossi’s outfit have effectively become the number two to the factory team, with Di Giannantonio taking the third factory bike.
VR46 know the key to success with Ducati, as the manufacturer knows their bikes well. Di Giannantonio and teammate Franco Morbidelli have taken advantage of that, with four podiums between them from 10 races.
However, the latter has been the lead rider for VR46 despite being on year-old machinery. Morbidelli has three podiums to his name and sits 21 points ahead of Di Giannantonio, having struggled with his collarbone injury in the opening races.
Di Giannantonio says VR46 took a ‘big step forward’ with a setup change in Qatar, even if he finished 16th following incidents with Alex Marquez and Martin. The Italian is starting to show how quick he can be on the GP25, which will serve as a warning for Marc Marquez now he is back to full fitness.
