Chelsea, Newcastle in Champions League as Villa, Forest miss out

The focus was on European qualification on the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League season, with Manchester City and Chelsea among five teams hoping to finish the day in the top five.

The Blues faced a trip to one of the surprise packages of the season, Nottingham Forest, who also had designs on reaching the Champions League after an impressive campaign.

Aston Villa and Newcastle were rivalling them to take on Europe’s elite, with Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford bidding for a possible Europa Conference League play-offs spot.

101GreatGoals.com summarises the drama and despair of the final day of the 2024/25 Premier League, including results, goals and permutations.

Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea: Blues back in Champions League

Forest would have been in the Champions League with victory or Europa League with a point, but finished seventh and had to settle for the Conference League as Chelsea secured fourth.

Defender Levi Colwill was the unlikely hero, scoring the 50th-minute winner for the Conference League finalists as manager Enzo Maresca’s first season in charge ended on a glorious high.

Man United vs Aston Villa: Villans in Europa League

Champions League quarter-finalists this season, Aston Villa took sixth and will be in next season’s Europa League after a deserved 2-0 defeat against Manchester United, who finish 15th.

Emiliano Martinez was sent off during first-half added time and, shortly after a Morgan Rogers goal was contentiously ruled out following a Video Assistant Referee review, Amad Diallo headed United ahead in the 76th minute. Christian Eriksen added an 87th-minute penalty.

Newcastle vs Everton: Magpies back in Champions League

Newcastle will return to the Champions League after a season away, keeping fifth spot because of Villa and Forest’s defeats.

The Magpies’ six-match winning league run came to an end through Carlos Alcaraz’s 65th-minute header for Everton, who finished 13th.

Manchester City have had a dire season by their standards under Pep Guardiola but the dethroned champions finished third, three points behind Arsenal immediately above them.

Ilkay Gundogan’s 21st-minute bicycle kick and an Erling Haaland penalty 18 minutes from time ensured Fulham came 11th.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace: Salah penalty denies Eagles

Ismaila Sarr risked accusations of party-spoiling by slotting FA Cup winners Crystal Palace ahead after nine minutes at Anfield.

The runaway champions had Ryan Gravenberch dismissed in the 68th minute, but Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah’s penalty gave them a point on a day of celebration, leaving the Eagles 12th.

Tottenham vs Brighton: Albion miss out on Europe

Brighton had been whittling down a complicated list of permutations to reach the Conference League, but their finishing position of eighth proved insufficient because of Chelsea’s result, although they came from behind to sign off in style at Europa League winners Tottenham, who took 17th.

Dominic Solanke opened the scoring with a penalty but the Seagulls swooped for a 4-1 win courtesy of two Jack Hinshelwood goals inside 14 second-half minutes, an 88th-minute Matt O’Riley penalty and a goal for the highlights reel by Diego Gomez during added time.

Southampton vs Arsenal: Gunners leave it late

Relegated Southampton gave themselves a chance of avoiding a record 30th defeat in a top-flight season when Ross Stewart headed their 56th-minute equaliser, replying to Kieran Tierney’s strike two minutes before the break.

Substitute Martin Odegaard gave Arsenal their 2-1 win in the 90th minute with a precise finish as they ended 10 points behind Liverpool.

Wolves vs Brentford: Bees bag 10th

Brentford retained faint hopes of European qualification at the start of the final round of games and went ahead through Bryan Mbeumo’s 20th league goal of the season.

A superb strike by Marshall Munetsi with 15 minutes remaining earned a point for Wolves, who are 16th.

Bournemouth vs Leicester City: Semenyo sparkles

Antoine Semenyo struck in the 75th and 88th minutes as Bournemouth signed off an excellent season with victory over relegated Leicester.

Real Madrid-bound defender Dean Huijsen assisted Semenyo’s second, helping Bournemouth claim ninth place.

Ipswich vs West Ham: Bowen goal on landmark

Jarrod Bowen scored for a fourth successive game on his 200th Premier League appearance as West Ham won 3-1 at relegated Ipswich.

Bowen set up James Ward-Prowse’s first-half opener but Nathan Broadhead equalised after the break before Bowen struck and Mohammed Kudus scored the pick of the goals. West Ham rose two places to 14th.
