Aprilia are, on the face of it, refusing to accept that Jorge Martin will leave. That’s despite the fact that the world champion has triggered an exit clause in his contract.
Aprilia believe Martin’s clause is invalid because, while it’s tied to his position in the standings, he’s only appeared in one of the first six races. But the consensus is that the relationship cannot recover from this point.
Martin has issued a vote of no confidence in Aprilia despite barely riding the RS-GP25. It’s even been suggested that he might never ride for the team again.
The Spaniard remains out injured after breaking 11 ribs and puncturing his lung in a collision with Fabio di Giannantonio in Qatar. It’s conceivable that Martin will return for a different team in 2026.
Aprilia expect him to appear at their ‘Pro Experience Day’ for fans after the British GP. That suggests both parties are willing to respect the contract in the short term, but it would be remarkable if he stayed beyond the end of the season.
Aprilia can’t replace Jorge Martin until contract dispute is resolved
Aprilia seem ready to fight a legal battle with Martin, should he refuse to yield. But as Paddock-GP point out, this creates a ‘problem’.
While the 27-year-old is under contract, ‘they cannot officially recruit anyone’. They may miss opportunities presented to them by the market.
Trackhouse rider Ai Ogura is a potential replacement for Martin. He should be available even if they have to wait until the autumn or winter to finalise their line-up.
But while Ogura is the lead rider on Aprilia machinery this season, the team reportedly have concerns over his lack of experience. And they may want a bigger name, with one pundit suggesting Marco Bezzecchi is ill-equipped to lead a team.
Could Aprilia turn to Superbikes for their Jorge Martin replacement?
Martin’s manager admits Aprilia are in an uncomfortable position after his bombshell decision. He was supposed to be the rider they built around.
Aprilia are expected to be open with the media on Thursday ahead of the British GP. All the reporters on the ground will be drawn towards Massimo Rivola.
The team have already been linked with a whole host of names inside and outside the Grand Prix paddock. Enea Bastianini is a surprise option for Aprilia, even though he’s just joined Tech3.
Even more radically, Aprilia are potential suitors for Nicolo Bulega, the World Superbikes leader, if he decides to change disciplines.
