Andy Cruz took to social media to express his disappointment in his “son,” Keyshawn Davis, for failing to make weight and being stripped of his WBO lightweight title last Friday night in Norfolk, Virginia. It appears Keyshawn’s once-promising career is disintegrating due to his actions. Cruz states this is “not my values I showed him.”

Cruz: “Not My Values”
The 2020 Olympic gold medalist Cruz says these are “not the values” he taught Keyshawn in the amateur days, and he states he’ll be “reuniited” with him in time. Keyshawn plans on campaigning as a light welterweight now to make it easier for him to make weight. He should have done this a year ago when it was clear that he was too big for the 135-lb division.
Davis had a bad week. He not only lost his title by coming in 4.3 lbs over the lightweight limit, but he got into an altercation with his former opponent, Nahir Albright, in his dressing room last Saturday. This was after Albright had defeated Keyshawn’s older brother, Kelvin Davis, by a 10-round majority decision.
“As a father, I feel disappointed in my son because those [coming in Overweight by 4.3 lbs last Friday] are not the values I showed him. As for [Keyshawn] moving up in weight, that’s fine. Ultimately, it’s a matter of time before father and son are reunited. He will never escape me. Sooner or later, he’ll be reunited with his father,” said Andy Cruz to Matchroom Boxing, choosing to sound off on Keyshawn Davis missing weight last Friday for his canceled title defense against Edin De Los Santos.
The Cuban Andy Cruz beat Davis four times in the amateurs, including in the finals of the 2020 Olympics. In the pros, Keyshawn has shown no desire to fight Cruz again, and many believe he’s scared of being beaten again.
Andy’s Upcoming Title Eliminator
Cruz (5-0, 2 KOs) is fighting Hironori Mishiro (17-1-1, 6 KOs) in a 12-round IBF lightweight title eliminator this Saturday, June 14th, on DAZN. The winner of their fight will be the mandatory challenger for IBF 135-lb champion Raymond Muratalla. Cruz-Mishiro is the co-feature on the Richardson Hitchins vs. George Kambosos Jr. card at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York.
