Trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis says he’s interested in Andy Cruz facing Keyshawn Davis, and he predicts Andy will beat him. That would be the Cuban talent’s fifth straight win over Keyshawn, making him a perfect 5-0.
Bozy has been training the 2020 Olympic gold medalist since he turned pro in 2023, and he knows the kinds of skills he has in the two years that he’s been working with him. Keyshawn hasn’t shown any interest in fighting Cruz, and it’s unlikely the fight will ever happen without Turki Alalshikh showing interest in financing it. Davis doesn’t want to lose again and mess up his ‘Businessman’ career path.
Cruz vs. Mishiro Tonight
Tonight, Cruz (5-0, 2 KOs) is fighting in a 12-round IBF lightweight title eliminator against
Hironori Mishiro (17-1-1, 6 KOs) on the Richardson Hitchins vs. George Kambosos Jr. card at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event will be broadcast live on DAZN at 8:00 P.M. ET/5:00 P.M. PT.
“I think that would be a good fight because they fought four times in the amateurs. I ain’t got anything bad to say about him when it comes to him and Andy fighting,” said trainer Derek ‘Bozy’ Ennis to Fighthype when asked about his interest in a fight between Andy Cruz and Keyshawn Davis. “We would love that fight. It ain’t nothing personal.”
Cruz would have to move up soon to 140 for that fight to happen, because Keyshawn will likely be moving to 147 almost immediately. He’s already big enough to fight at welterweight, and that’s where the money fights are for him. 140 will be difficult for Keyshawn to make, and he won’t be able to get the fight he wants against Teofimo Lopez because he’s not going to agree to fight him. There’s not enough money in that match-up.
“Keyshawn carries a little punching power, but he’s different. He doesn’t fight the same way he fought in the amateurs,” said Bozy. “Andy, don’t fight the same either. He’s defensively smart and slick. I think it’s going to be a beautiful fight, but I think we’re going to be victorious,” said Bozy about his belief that Cruz will defeat Keyshawn.
In Davis’s last few fights, he’s looked more like a puncher than ever, but that’s becaue he’d outgrown the 135-lb division. After Keyshawn rehydrated for his fights against Densys Berinchyk, Gusatov Lemos, and Miguel Madueno, he looked like he weighed around 160. He was a lot bigger than those guys.
Now that Keyshawn is moving up to 140, his size advantage won’t be as substantial. It’ll still be there, but not quite as dramatic as it had been. He should be fighting at 147, but he would have a tougher time because he’d have to deal with talented fighters closer to his size. Fighters like Shakhram Giyasov, Eimantas Stanionis, and Rolady ‘Rolly’ Romero would punch holes through him. He couldn’t avoid them indefinitely if he were to fight at 147, because they are some of the major players.
Cruz vs. Mishiro Prediction
“His opponent [Hironori Mishiro] has a nice jab, and plus, he can punch,” said Ennis about Cruz’s opponent for tonight, Mishiro. “That’s the only thing I can see. Other than that, he’ll [Andy] be victorious in this fight. It should be a good fight. You can’t take nothing away from it. Anything can happen in boxing. The only thing I can say is we’ll see when we get in there.”
The one big problem that tonight’s fight has is that Hironori Mishiro has never fought a world-class opponent before. He’s 30 years old, an eight-year pro, yet he’s never fought anyone close to being a top-tier contender before. The IBF has its reasons for giving Mishiro a #5 ranking at lightweight, but he doesn’t belong fighting a title eliminator against a talent like Cruz.
We’ll see that tonight when he’s run out of the ring quickly in a one-sided fight. Cruz may let Mishiro hang around tonight because he’s not a big knockout artist, but it’s likely going to be one-sided as long as it lasts.
