Kevin Schwantz names a surprising rider his ‘favourite’ as Marc Marquez makes MotoGP ‘boring’

Marc Marquez proved yet again why he is the King of MotorLand Aragon on Friday as the Ducati rider dominated the timesheets during practice for the Aragon Grand Prix.

The 32-year-old kicked off his weekend by laying down an imperious marker, as Marquez set a 1:46.974 lap to top the timesheet in FP1 by 0.970 seconds to Alex Marquez. His advantage over the Gresini ace fell to 0.204s in pre-qualifying practice, as Marc improved to a 1:46.397.

Ducati will expect the six-time premier class champion to now turn his promising pace into a fifth pole position of the 2025 MotoGP season and also Marquez’s seventh at the Aragon GP to date. The Spaniard has won six times at the Alcaniz track in his 10 previous MotoGP visits.

Kevin Schwantz thinks Marc Marquez makes MotoGP ‘boring to watch’ by dominating with Ducati

But Marquez securing pole for each of the opening four rounds, winning each of the first six Sprint Races and three of the first four Grands Prix this term does not excite Kevin Schwantz. Instead, the 1993 500cc champion feels the Ducati star can make MotoGP ‘boring to watch’.

Marquez set a new MotoGP record with six consecutive Sprint wins after his move to Ducati from Gresini this year. He also now leads the riders’ championship with 196 points ahead of his brother, Alex, on 172. Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia is third but is 72 points adrift.

Schwantz told Andrea Migno’s MigBabol podcast: “So far we have seen how Marc, a bit like when he was at Honda before his injury, is able to make the races boring for us who watch.

“The others don’t seem to be able to do much about it, except trying to understand where Marc is stronger than them.”

Johann Zarco has almost proven Schwantz’s claim at the Aragon GP, after the LCR Honda rider lauded what Marquez can do at the Alcaniz circuit. Zarco wants to learn from Marquez at the Aragon GP, as the Frenchman cannot understand why he is ‘just incredible’ at Aragon.

Kevin Schwantz names VR46 star Franco Morbidelli as his ‘favourite rider’ on the 2025 MotoGP grid

Schwantz is a big fan of VR46 ace Franco Morbidelli, though, as the American icon admires the Italian’s approach. Morbidelli heads into the Aragon GP sat fourth in the standings on 98 points from the first seven rounds, marking his best start to a MotoGP season in his career.

“If I had to choose a favourite rider, I would say Morbidelli, who is a calm, relaxed and kind guy,” Schwantz added. “I have to say, though, that I don’t spend enough time with any of today’s riders to be able to really elect a favourite”

Morbidelli enjoyed a great start to his season after joining VR46 from Pramac to remain on a Ducati Desmosedici GP24. He took P4 in the Thai Grand Prix, P3 in the Argentina Grand Prix, P4 in the Americas Grand Prix and P3 in the Qatar Grand Prix before hitting a bump in Spain.

The 30-year-old retired from the Spanish Grand Prix and sealed P15 in the French Grand Prix after he pitted on the sighting lap for slick tyres. But Morbidelli bounced back with P4 in the British Grand Prix, finishing 0.017s behind Marquez for the final podium spot at Silverstone.

But 2025 has not been entirely smooth sailing for the Roman. He frustrated Sylvain Guintoli as Morbidelli impeded Marco Bezzecchi in practice at Silverstone. It was not his first drama of the term, as Morbidelli told Bagnaia he would ‘improve’ after impeding him in Thailand.
