Plant Vs. Resendiz: “There Are Levels” Saturday
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Caleb Plant says he’s going to his opponent, Jose Armando Resendiz, that there are “levels” when they meet in the 12-round headliner at super middleweight this Saturday, May 31st, at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.

This is another tune-up fight for the former IBF 168-lb champion Plant (23-2, 14 KOs). So, it’s expected that he’s going to be a lot better than his opponent, Resendiz. Saturday’s event will be shown on PBC on Prime Video starting at 8:00 p.m. ET.

It’s unclear why Resendiz (15-2, 11 KOs) was selected because he fights at middleweight, not at 168. The idea is obviously to ensure Plant doesn’t get beaten, as this is a showcase to create interest in a potential fight between him and Jermall Charlo next. Both are trying to get fights against Canelo Alvarez.

“This is one of the best versions of myself. I had a hell of a training camp, and all the experience that I have, it’ll show,” said Caleb Plant to the media today. “Skills and if you check my last fight [Trevor McCumby], I’ve got a great inside game, too,” said Plant on what is in store for Armando Resendiz on Saturday.

Plant’s Inactivity and Ambition

What we saw from Plant against McCumby in his last fight, he’s not the “best version” of what he once was in 2021 and earlier. He’s lost something from his game from inactivity, and the punishment he endured against Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. Moreover, Plant has been inactive for extended periods since getting a big payday against Canelo. He made many millions from that fight, and he’s not shown the same ambition that he once had before he struck it rich.

“If that’s what he wants, I’m going to show him there are levels. I feel like there are a lot of great fights out there. The Jermall fight, Munguia, Berlanga, Pacheco, Sheeraz, and Mbilli. All those fights are big fights for me. Any one of them could fight each other, and it would not be as big a fight for any one of them if they fought me,” said Plant.

It’s good to hear Plant talk boldly about his tune-up opponent. But would he do the same if he were fighting one of the killers in the 168-lb division, like Christian Mbilli, Edgar Berlanga, or Hamzah Sheeraz? He chose Resendiz, who is a middleweight. He could have selected someone from the 168-lb division, but opted for a fighter who had recently been beaten in the 160-lb division.

Plant’s “Complete Fighter” Flaws

“I’m a complete fighter, inside, outside, and at mid-range. Right now, that’s on the back burner for me. I’m just focused on Saturday. I can only fight one fight at a time. That fight don’t happen unless I get my hand raised in this one,” said Plant when asked about a fight between him and Jermall Charlo. “Right now, I’m locked in on that.”

I wouldn’t call Caleb Plant a “complete fighter” because he’s not a puncher, and he’s got stamina issues. He’s run out of gas in fights against David Benavidez, Canelo Alvarez, and Jose Uzcategui. To be a complete fighter, you need power and stamina. Plant is missing in both of those areas.

“I put everything else on the back burner, and then once I get my hand raised, May 31st on Saturday, we’ll have plenty of time to talk about it. I can think on all that, but right now, I’m just focused,” said Plant.

Caleb is discussing the potential fight against Jermall Charlo that could occur next if both fighters win. He believes that beating the inactive 35-year-old Jermall will open the door for a rematch against Canelo Alvarez. Jermall has only fought once in the last four years since 2021, and looked terrible in his previous fight, coming off a 2.5-year layoff in 2023. This is the guy that Plant wants. It’s a business-level fight.
