Whyte’s Delusion: Inactivity Didn’t Kill Career, Fury Loss Did

Dillian Whyte says he wants to fight as much as possible to get another chance “for the world title.” The unranked former heavyweight world title challenger Whyte (31-3, 21 KOs) is fighting next month on June 7th against a still-to-be-determined opponent at Portman Road Football Ground. Whyte says he wants to use this bout to get active, then get a “big fight” in July or August.

Whyte’s World Title Quest

For Whyte to be given a title shot against the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk vs. Daniel Dubois fight, he would need to beat a highly ranked contender that the boxing public respects. He can’t get away with selecting a bottom-feeder or a fighter that doesn’t belong in the top 15. The ideal opponent Whyte needs to defeat to get a fast title shot is from this list:

– Agit Kabayel
– Joseph Parker
– Bakhodir Jalolov
– Moses Itauma
– Martin Bakole: *if his weight is in mid-280s

The chances of Whyte choosing any of those fighters are remote, as he would likely lose to all of them and be put out of his misery. Even a prime version of himself would be in over his head against those guys. They’ve got too much talent for him, and he would be taken out quickly.

Whyte’s idea of a “big fight” to put him in a position to fight for a world title is likely to be against these fighters:

  1. Michael Hunter: He’s ranked #2 WBA and will be the likely target for Dillian’s “big fight” to get him a quick title shot.
  2. Guido Vianello
  3. Otto Wallin
  4. Murat Gassiev

These fighters are technically contenders in the heavyweight division. So, Dillian would be fighting a contender if he battled one of those guys, but not in an absolute sense.

“I’m serious about having a last run at it again and possibly fighting for the world title. So I want to put myself in the position that,” said Dillian Whyte to Ring Magazine about his goal. “Inactivity has basically killed my career in the last three years. I am looking at having a big fight at the end of July or early August.”

What killed Whyte’s career was his loss to Tyson Fury, not his inactivity. Dillian has been active. He fought twice in 2024 and twice in 2022. The only year Whyte was inactive was 2023, but that’s understandable. He got a big payday of millions against Fury in 2022, so he’s obviously enjoying the money.
