Jorge Martin’s decision to trigger his Aprilia release clause could have indirect but significant consequences for Toprak Razgatlioglu. The two-time World Superbikes champion has been heavily linked with a move to MotoGP.
Honda is Martin’s likeliest destination should he go through with his Aprilia exit. They are the only manufacturer with an opening at the factory team for 2026.
Joan Mir’s contract isn’t completely watertight, but there’s no firm indication that he could lose his seat. It looks as if Luca Marini’s spot is the one that’s up for grabs.
At the start of the month, it was reported that Honda were preparing an ‘astronomical’ offer for Razgatlioglu. The availability of Martin could see their plans change.
Razgatlioglu has also been linked with Pramac, but a Honda offer would be a more attractive route into MotoGP. The most successful and prestigious team on the grid have just ended their victory drought through LCR’s Johann Zarco, a landmark moment in their resurgence.
Toprak Razgatlioglu ‘understands’ Jorge Martin’s controversial Aprilia decision
Speaking to GPOne ahead of the WSBK Czech round, Razgatlioglu said he, like the rest of the motorcycle racing world, was surprised by the Martin bombshell. Even though his manager Kenan Sofoglu has supposedly been in talks with Honda, he didn’t get wind of it.
Among others, Giacomo Agostini has questioned Martin’s motives. He only completed 14 laps during pre-season testing before an injury, and further accidents have limited him to a solitary appearance in-season.
There’s talk that Martin wants to leave Aprilia for more money at Honda. That may only sharpen the backlash, but Razgatlioglu says he understands why the Spaniard wants to change teams already.
“Yes, I’m surprised by this news,” he said. “Unfortunately for him, it hasn’t been an easy ride, as he got injured immediately and then got injured again.
“Things often don’t go as expected, and I understand his decision. I hope he finds the best solution to make him happy.”
Jorge Martin told Aprilia he’d give them another six races – here’s how they responded
Honda aren’t entirely sold on Martin yet – they want to see what kind of condition he’s in when he returns before they commit to a move. If there are signs of long-term repercussions from his severe Qatar injuries, they could have second thoughts.
That would potentially open the door for Razgatlioglu, though he’s clearly wished his counterpart well. They were both title-winners in their respective disciplines last year.
Martin hasn’t confirmed he’s leaving Aprilia, but he’s certainly headed in that direction after activating the clause. He’s apparently willing to give the team another six races to show why he should stay.
However, Aprilia have rejected Martin’s offer. They think Martin’s injury invalidates the clause, so there may be a legal battle in the offing.
Honda only want Martin if he can make a clean break from Aprilia, but that doesn’t seem to be forthcoming. A deal for Razgatlioglu may be much easier to pull off.
