Boxing Results: Revenge Served: Munguia Learns From Past, Dominates Tired Surace In Rematch Despite Lack Of Significant Improvement

Former junior middleweight champion Jaime Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) got his revenge by beating Bruno Surace (26-1-2, 5 KOs) by a 12-round unanimous decision on Saturday night in their rematch at The Venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Surace, 26, looked like 24k gold in the early going, hitting the punching bag-like Munguia repeatedly with lightning-fast right hands. The shots were eye-catching, and the impact was impressive.

Surace Fades

Bruno’s work rate dropped steadily from rounds five through twelve. That allowed Munguia to take over and coast to the victory.

Around the mid-point of the fight, Bruno began to gas out, give ground, and fail to keep the action in the center of the ring. He wasn’t getting hit much by Munguia, yet he would retreat to the ropes and cover up like a sparring partner. Munguia took advantage of this to tee off and win the rounds.

In rounds 10 through 12, you could tell that Surace was tired and had nothing left of his power. He threw very punches in those rounds and was mostly moving around and shelling up.

Munguia was a lot more disciplined tonight, keeping his guard up and not fighting recklessly against Surace like he had last December when he was knocked out in six rounds in Tijuana, Mexico.

I wish I could say that Munguia looked like he’d made huge improvements from his previous fight, but I can’t. He still looked like the same run-of-the-mill contender that he’d always been his entire career. The difference was that Surace was worse. He didn’t show any of the power that he’d had in the early rounds in the second, and let Munguia hit him at will.

Any super middleweight contender in the division would have done the same to Surace that Munguia did. He just happened to be the guy that was facing him tonight due to the need for their rematch.

Edgar Berlanga has been talking up wanting a fight against Munguia if he wins his July 12th fight against Hamzah Sheeraz in New York City. That might be an option for Munguia if he wants a nice payday. It would be a 50-50 fight between two flawed contenders.
