A practice net
Sure, a teched-out simulator in the basement would be nice, but I’m not quite there yet. My happy alternative looms in my backyard: a 7-foot-tall hitting net accompanied by a turf mat and bucket of balls my kid found in the woods at the course up the street. It’s not much — but it’s enough! Between meetings or over a beer at twilight, I’ll sneak out and beat a few orbs into the sturdy mesh. This style of golf might not offer the same feedback as a five-figure sim but it does provide something else that even the grandest subterranean setup can’t deliver: time outdoors. A backyard chipping target
I need something to practice my middling short game, but it also might be fun to inspire my kids to chip with me in the backyard. That’s this pop-up pitching and chipping target from Rukket Sports. A GPS/speaker combo
What do I covet? The question is maybe more what do my playing partners want — and that’s for me to stop pestering them for yardages. Yes, I’m among the last people walking earth’s fairways to not own a distance-measuring device, and I think that this is the year I join the crowd. One, in particular, has caught my eye, as it combines something else I’ve coveted — a speaker. I’ve always thought it’d be great to listen to MC Hammer as I hammer a drive, or Toto, should I ever play in Africa. At-home speed training
Coming out of the winter, I noticed my clubhead speed had dipped quite a bit, despite me being pretty faithful to the gym. Combine that with Super Speed Golf’s recently released Speed Sticks Pro speed training set, I thought now was the perfect time to get a set in hand. The new Speed Sticks have an upgraded shaft, new larger and strategically textured grips to better train grip strength, and a newly designed weighting system to help match them to your driver, as well as use one club as a travel system.
Whether you’d like to get from a 200 yard drive to 230 or 270 to 300, speed training can be a great way to do it and make it so that speed comes easier by essentially tricking your body into moving faster.

A lightweight carry bag
Because I live pretty far from most of my family, I’ve been stockpiling golf clubs to build up a few different sets — one for home, one at my parents’ house, one at my in-laws’ — so that if I’m headed to visit I won’t have to schlep my sticks. This means it’s time to buy a third Ping Moonlite carry bag, which is reasonably priced, extremely comfy to carry and, importantly for my purposes, doesn’t take up much space. A new hybrid
Denial is part of golf. And life. But on both fronts, it’s time I faced up to reality. I just can’t hit a 4-iron with any kind of consistency anymore. It happens to us all. It happened to Fred Couples. Hybrids become a sensible substitute. This spring, I’m looking to swap out my old 4-iron for a lightweight, easy-hitting hybrid equivalent. More forgiveness. Easier to get airborne with my slowing swing speed.
TaylorMade’s Qi35 Max Lite line first caught my eye through the results of our 2025 ClubTest. The reviews were glowing from golfers of my ilk. A new travel bag
After many loyal years of service and at least one complete trip around the world, my old golf travel bag is cooked. It’s time for a new one, to take on some new adventures.
Some must-haves: space — not just for golf clubs, but for the inevitable onslaught of extra socks, shoes, golf balls, warm layers and raincoats that join my average packing session. Durability — I travel upwards of 10 times (and usually closer to 20 times) per year with my clubs, I do not want to worry about them getting damaged. And … structural integrity — perhaps this goes without saying, but the bag has to be sturdy near the wheels and zippers. My previous bag held up really well in these areas, and I had it for half a decade of constant use.
So, what’s the verdict? The Club Glove College Traveler Bag. Sure, the College costs a pretty penny, but I’m making a purchase I’m hoping will last me a Presidential term … if not multiple. I’m okay with bucking up. —James Colgan

A travel backpack
For years, I have attempted to be a cool and stylish tote-bag mom while traveling. For short trips, it worked out just fine. But on last year’s journey across the pond with my family, mom’s bag ended up as the default dumping ground for all my kids’ airplane entertainment, and my shoulder was absolutely wrecked from carrying a bulging bag full of books, Legos, tablets, crayons, coloring books, snacks and water bottles — not to mention my own computer and purse.
