Formula 1 has announced a weekend attendance figure of 352,000 at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix, a slight increase on the 2024 number.
352,000 spectators attended Circuit Gilles Villeneuve over the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix weekend. George Russell won the race from pole position, securing his and Mercedes’ first victory of the season. Team-mate Kimi Antonelli joined him on the podium and celebrated becoming the sport’s third-youngest podium finisher and the first Italian in the top three since Jarno Trulli in 2009.
The race came to a dramatic conclusion as Lando Norris collided with Oscar Piastri, putting the Brit out of the race after battling with his McLaren team-mate for fourth place. As a result, Piastri’s championship lead increased to 22 points.
The Canadian Grand Prix ranks as the second-best attended race of the season so far, behind only the Australian Grand Prix (465,000). In 2024, the Montreal race ended the season as the fifth best-attended race of the year, with the yet-to-come British, Mexico City and Belgian races all attracting larger crowds.
Of the ten races held so far in 2025, the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is the only one for which an attendance figure has not been revealed. Total attendance in 2025 now stands at 2.5 million across the season. In 2024, the 24 rounds attracted 6.5 million spectators in total – a figure which F1 is on track to exceed this year.
Trackside Improvements at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix
Attendance numbers have grown in Montreal in recent years. The last race before the coronavirus pandemic, in 2019, had a weekend total of 307,000 spectators. When F1 returned in 2022, the race weekend had 338,000 attendees. The figures have increased incrementally since then, growing by 7,000 in 2023, 5,000 in 2024 and 2,000 in 2025.
A range of improvements were made ahead of the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix to eliminate organisational issues which disrupted fans’ enjoyment of the race weekend in 2024. Organisers promised easier wayfinding for fans trackside as a result of increased signage, plus improved communication methods.
For the teams, there were new hospitality suites in the paddock. There were also reassurances that the teams’ garages had been better waterproofed following leaking issues in the rain-hit 2024 race weekend. The fully dry weekend – the first at the Canadian Grand Prix since 2019 – meant that this was not a problem.
New May Date for the 2026 Canadian Grand Prix
2025 marked the final time that the Canadian Grand Prix took place in June. From 2026 onwards, as per a new agreement signed between Montreal race organisers and Formula 1, the race will be held annually on the third or fourth weekend in May. It will be the first time since 1981, when the Canadian round took place towards the end of the season in September, that the Montreal race will not be held in June.
When revealed last week, the Canadian Grand Prix falls on May 24 on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar. The date and time is a direct clash with the Indianapolis 500, meaning viewing figures of the Canadian race in American territories are almost certain to take a significant hit next year.
